Escape to Puerto Rico - March 2008
To celebrate our 39th anniversary, Rickie fashioned another surprise get-away for us. This was the 3rd year she's done the surprise thing, and she really broke out of the box from our previous trips to Pittsburgh and Detroit. I had no clue on where we were going until getting to the airport. I did know that it would be warm (80 to 85F), but that's about it. We flew into San Juan, Puerto Rico, rented a car and traveled westward across the island to Rincon, an area noted for excellent surfing (it's mentioned in the Beach Boys song "Surfing Safari"). Puerto Rico is approximately 100 miles long east to west and 32 miles wide north to south, with 3.9 million people, making it one of the highest population densities in the world. But most of the people are concentrated around the coast while the mountainous interior is mostly undeveloped. We spent 4 days at a beautiful beach resort close to Rincon. While I'm definitely not a "beach person" we surely did enjoy the mild temperatures, low humidity and gentle breezes, and beautiful scenery....a great companion as we became acquainted with authentic Puerto Rican Pina Caladas. During the days we ventured off to travel around the island and see the sights. Driving was a real experience which the guide books described as "dangerous". You can check out some short videos that I have posted on Youtube to get a flavor of the rural driving conditions. We spent our last day in Old San Juan where we visited El Morro the early fortress build by the Spanish settlers in the early 1500's. After a beautiful 5 days, it was tough coming back to face the rain and snow, as our winter in Ohio continued to linger on. My only regret is that I didn't have the Miata for those wild roads!
